Walking around the townThe old town is relatively flat but cobbled. There are steep climbs with steps to reach some of the back streets, but these are easily avoided. It is possible to walk around the city walls but in total it is about 2km and can take up to 1 hour. There are both steep inclines and many steps along this path and it is advised only for the active. It costs 50 kunas per person to walk the walls.
Main Highlights
The main entrance to the Old Town is at the Pile Gate. From here you can see the Onofrio Fountain before walking along the outer walls . Inside and into the heart of the Old Town, you will discover monasteries, palaces and the Church of St. Blaise, Patron Saint of Dubrovnik.
The main street of Placa Stradun is an area worth visiting to shop and soak up its atmosphere.
It is a wide marble street lined with shops and boutiques althouh there are many smaller ones to be found in the the side streets too. Some local shops will close for siesta but the majority of tourist shops will stay open throughout the day. There is also a small market in the centre selling fresh fruit and flowers that is open from early morning to lunchtime.
Neighbouring Islands - visit one of the surrounding Elephite Islands ,Lopud, Lokrum or Kolocep, all favorite retreats for the locals. This also gives you a chance to see the city from the water, an equally impressive view.
